Demystifying New Media and Web 2.0:
Why This Issue Matters to You

Girl at computerHave you wondered about the buzz surrounding Facebook, blogs, YouTube, and Twitter? These and other online technologies represent the Internet’s next generation—known as Web 2.0—and the next generation is here! These platforms offer exciting potential to raise awareness, and most importantly, engage many of your audiences in an online conversation around youth violence and substance abuse prevention. Best of all, most of these tools are free, accessible, and easy to use.

This edition of the Communication Coach Online will introduce you to many of the most common Web 2.0 tools and demonstrate how you can leverage their power to raise the online presence of your initiative and move your audiences to take action. Your communication specialist is also available to help you incorporate Web 2.0 and new media into your broader communication strategy. E-mail your communication specialist or call us at 1–800–790–2647 and let us know how we can help!

Get in the Know About Web 2.0

Hands of woman on laptop at table with othersWe know you are comfortable sending e-mail and surfing the Web, but even relatively tech-savvy project directors can feel out of touch with the new generation of Web technologies popular with today’s young people. There is a lot of hesitation—even fear —about embracing sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. Questions of safety and security arise. If you take time to explore these popular sites, you’ll find that it is easy to create an account, set up a profile, and adjust your preferences—including security settings—to get the most out of your new and up-to-date marketing and communication efforts. Read more.

Campbell County, WY, Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) Initiative

SS/HS Project Director Kip Farnum knows a thing or two about taking on new challenges. But, sometimes he requires a little convincing to see the benefits of an innovative opportunity.

Recently, Farnum was approached by a member of his staff with an idea to get SS/HS messages to youth by using popular social networking Web sites like Facebook and MySpace. “When Charlotte told me what she wanted to do, I had a knee-jerk reaction,” he said. “We can’t go there.” Read more.

Weblog: Our Turn

Since our grant site is in its first year of funding, we are really searching for effective ways to introduce the community to our new programs and prevention messages. Recently, we have decided to start utilizing social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook as a way of reaching high school students.  We are hopeful about the potential of new media techniques to get “in touch” with the students in a way that is familiar and comfortable to them.
